Intuition, cycles, and new beginnings, and it is tied to the moon in a surprising number of cultures that never met each other. Roman writers thought it was moonlight made solid. Hindu tradition links it to the moon and to Mondays. It has been carried as a travellers' stone for centuries, and it had a huge moment in Art Nouveau jewellery.

Where it comes from
Sri Lanka produces the classic material and has for centuries. The best blue glow on a nearly colourless stone is still called Sri Lankan quality. India supplies rainbow moonstone, which is technically labradorite rather than true moonstone, a naming muddle the trade has never bothered to fix. Myanmar, Madagascar and Tanzania also produce it.
Looking after it
- Water: brief only. Do not soak, and never put it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Jewellers see a lot of moonstones cracked that way.
- Knocks: it chips more easily than its price suggests. Take the ring off before the washing up.
- Sunlight: safe.

- Real moonstone is translucent, not opaque white.
