Most crystal guides tell you what a stone is said to do and skip what it actually is. We do both, in that order: the mineralogy first — what it is made of, how hard it is, why it is that color, and where in the world it comes out of the ground — and then what the tradition has long associated with it.
We never claim a stone treats an illness, because it does not. What crystals genuinely offer is focus, ritual, and something beautiful to hold while you think. That is worth plenty on its own, and it does not need to be oversold.

What are crystals?
A crystal is a solid whose atoms are arranged in a repeating, orderly pattern. Amethyst, rose quartz, and citrine are all the same mineral — quartz (silicon dioxide) — coloured differently by trace impurities. Not every popular 'crystal' is one: obsidian is volcanic glass with no crystal structure at all, and lapis lazuli is a rock made of several minerals together.
Do crystals actually work?
There is no scientific evidence that crystals heal illness or emit a therapeutic energy, and controlled studies have found their reported effects are indistinguishable from placebo. What they reliably do is give you a physical anchor for attention and intention, which is a real and useful thing. Use them for focus and ritual, never in place of medical care.
Which crystals cannot go in water?
As a rule of thumb, any stone softer than about 5 on the Mohs scale should stay out of water. Selenite is gypsum and dissolves. Malachite contains copper and can leach it into the water, which is why you should never drink it. Pyrite is an iron sulfide and rusts. Water is never required to cleanse a stone — moonlight, smoke, sound, or simply setting an intention all work without the risk.
Is my crystal real?
The most common giveaways are colour that is too uniform, air bubbles (a sign of glass), a stone that warms instantly in your hand, and a price that is too good. Real quartz is a 7 on the Mohs scale and will scratch glass, feels cool to the touch, and usually shows some natural inclusions or colour zoning. Most citrine sold today is heat-treated amethyst, which is common practice rather than fraud.
